Live Oak Plate 06-1

This is a very nice plate turned from wood of a Texas Live Oak tree. The plate blank was assembled from two separate boards with similar grain patterns which form a symmetrical, semi-book matched pair. The face of the plate has a gently cupped rim, 1.5 inches wide, which is separated from the flat central portion by a gently rounded ridge. One large and two small loose knots were encountered during turning. These were cleaned out and refilled with a mix of brass filings and epoxy. The overall diameter is just under 10 inches and the thickness is approximately 3/4 of an inch.

Note, the plate is much lighter in color than suggested by the top photo (where the plate is upright in a plate-holder). The colors in the image of the lower photo is very close to the light to honey brown of the plate.

The finish included careful sanding and hand-rubbed Danish Oil, followed by buffing and waxing to a soft satin glow. The finish is food safe and this plate is functional for food service.

Live Oak Plate 06-2

This is another beautiful plate turned from wood of a Texas Live Oak tree. The blank for this plate was assembled from two separate boards cut from the tree as a book matched pair. The resulting image has a very nice symmetry with a beautiful flame pattern at the top. These boards were "quarter-sawn" (cut at a high angle to the trees grain pattern), resulting in numerous bright, narrow "rays" which cross the wood's grain. The overall appearance of this complex grain is absolutely gorgous.

The face of the plate has a sharply cupped rim approximately 1 inch wide that is separated from the flat central portion by a pronounced, beaded ridge. The bead is set off by an incised, parallel groove on each side. The overall size is a diameter of just under 10 inches and a thickness of approximately 3/4 of an inch.

Note, the plate is much lighter in color than suggested by the top photo (where the plate is upright in a plate-holder) and the third photo. The plate color in the second and bottom photos are close to the true, golden brown colors of this plate.

The finish included careful sanding and hand-rubbed Danish Oil, followed by buffing and waxing to a soft satin glow. The finish is food safe and this plate is functional for food service.

Live Oak Plate 06-3

This is another plate in Texas Live Oak. The plate blank was assembled from two separate, quarter-sawn oak boards with similar grain patterns. The face of the plate has a gently cupped rim approximately 1 inch wide that is separated from the flat central portion by a pronounced, beaded ridge. The bead is set off by an incised, parallel groove on each side. The overall size is a diameter of approximately 9 3/4 inches and a thickness of approximately 3/4 of an inch.

Note - the colors in these photos are very close to the true golden brown colors of this plate.

The finish included careful sanding and hand-rubbed Danish Oil, followed by buffing and waxing to a soft satin glow. The finish is food safe and this plate is functional for food service.

Mesquite Platter 06-4

This is a very nice platter in Texas Honey Mesquite. The face of the platter has a steeply-dipping rim approximately 1 inch wide around a wide flat central portion. At 1/8 to 3/16 inch, the rim and bottom of this platter are very thin and result in a very light weight. The overall size is just under 12 inches wide and just under 1 inch thick.

Note, the plate is much lighter in color than suggested by the top photo (where the plate is upright in a plate-holder). The plate color in the other two photos are close to the true, honey brown color of this platter.

The finish included careful sanding and hand-rubbed Danish Oil, followed by buffing and waxing to a soft satin glow. The finish is food safe and this platter is functional for food service.

Australian Blackbutt Plate 06-1

This is an attractive platter turned from a seriously "foreign" wood - the Australian Blackbutt tree. I was given a piece of this wood when I was in Western Australia in 2005. The wood is an attractive light brown with shades of darker, speckled brown. When rotated in strong light, the wood exhibits a ripply iridescence at depth. A prominent, dark brown irregular knot is present in the center and a thin tight (healed) crack is present on one side.

This plate is approximately 10 inches in diameter with an overall thickness of approximately 3/4 inch. It is turned with a prominent cupped rim approximately 1-1/4 inch wide, separated from the flat central portion by a gently rounded bead. Note, the plate is much lighter in color than suggested by the center photo (where the plate is upright in a plate-holder). The color in the other two photos are close to the true, light brown of this platter.

The finish included careful sanding and hand-rubbed Danish Oil, followed by buffing and waxing to a soft satin glow.

Live Oak Platter 06-5

This is a very nice platter in quarter-sawn Texas Live Oak. The face of the platter has a wide, gently-dipping rim approximately 1 1/2 inch wide around a wide flat central portion. The rim and central portion are separated by a pronounced, beaded ridge with incised, parallel groove on each side. This platter is very thin and light weight. The size is just over 12 inches wide and approximately 3/4 inch thick.

Note, the plate is much lighter in color than suggested by the top photo (where the plate is upright in a plate-holder). The plate color in the other two photos are close to the true, golden brown color of this platter.

The finish included careful sanding and hand-rubbed Danish Oil, followed by buffing and waxing to a soft satin glow. The finish is food safe and this platter is functional for food service.

Live Oak Platter 06-6

This is a very nice platter in quarter-sawn Texas Live Oak. The face of the platter has a gently-cupped 1 1/4 inch wide rim separated from the wide flat central portion by a smooth, low ridge. This platter is 13 1/4 inches wide and approximately 3/4 inch thick.

A once-open portion of an irregular knot toward the center of the platter has been filled with mixture of brass and epoxy. This contrast between the brass and the golden brown of the Live Oak wood is very attractive. Note, the plate is much lighter in color than suggested by the top photo (where the plate is upright in a plate-holder). The plate color in the middle photo is very close to the true, golden brown color of this platter.

Finishing included careful sanding and hand-rubbed Danish Oil, followed by buffing and waxing to a soft satin glow. The finish is food safe and this platter is functional for food service.

Mesquite Plate 06-1

This plate was turned from Texas Honey Mesquite. The plate blank was assembled from three separate, Mesquite heartwood boards with similar grain patterns. One board on the left side is darker due to light spalting; a strip of yellow sapwood is present on the back. The face of the plate has a gently cupped rim approximately 1 1/4 inch wide that is separated from the flat central portion by a pronounced, beaded ridge. The bead is set off by an incised, parallel groove on each side. The overall size is a diameter of approximately 10 inches and a thickness of just over 3/4 of an inch.

The finish included careful sanding and hand-rubbed Danish Oil, followed by buffing and waxing to a soft satin glow. The finish is food safe and this plate is functional for food service.

Mesquite Plate 06-2

This plate was turned from Texas Honey Mesquite. The plate blank was assembled from two separate Mesquite heartwood boards with similar grain patterns. A facinating, spider-like web of very fine, epoxy-filled cracks radiate out from a small knot. This spider-like web is visible on both the front and back.

The face of the plate has a gently cupped rim approximately 1 inch wide that is separated from the flat central portion by a smoothly tapered ridge. The overall size is approximately 9 1/2 inches wide and just over 3/4 inch thick.

The finish included careful sanding and hand-rubbed Danish Oil, followed by buffing and waxing to a soft satin glow. The finish is food safe and this plate is functional for food service.

Maple Platter 06-2

This is a very nice lightweight platter turned from quarter-sawn soft Maple. It is just over 11 inches wide and approximately 3/4 inch thick. The face of the platter has a steep and narrow rim approximately 3/4 inch wide to define the limits of a wide flat central portion.

The overall color is a light, almost golden brown with two darker brown bands that cross the lower portion of the face (a third is visible on the back). These darker color bands form an interesting landscape-like appearance. The nature of these bands is uncertain - they cross the overall grain pattern and appear to be due to spalting.

The finish included careful sanding and hand-rubbed Danish Oil, followed by buffing and waxing to a soft satin glow. The finish is food safe and this plate is functional for food service.

Black Walnut Plate 06-1

This is an attractive plate in Texas Black Walnut. It is approximately 9-3/4 inches wide and 3/4 inch thick. It has a gently-cupped rim just under 1 inch wide and separated from the flat central portion by a smooth, low bead. The overall width of this plate is made up of three edge-joined boards, with the central board selected for the dramatic, very dark brown knot and ripply compression grain associated with the knot

The colors are primarily the dark (black?) brown of the Walnut heartwood but with some gentle fading to the lighter brown of Walnut sapwood. Unfortunately, my photography does not do justice to the soft colors of this walnut wood - the plate is much darker than indicated by the photos. Finishing included careful sanding and hand-rubbed Danish Oil, followed by buffing and waxing to a soft satin glow.

Black Walnut Plate 06-2

This is a very nice small plate in Texas Black Walnut. It is approximately 8 inches wide and 3/4 inch thick. It has a gently-cupped rim just under 1 inch wide and separated from the flat central portion by a smooth, low bead. The colors are primarily the dark (black?) brown of the Walnut heartwood but with some gentle fading to the lighter brown of Walnut sapwood. The top photo (plate on stand) is closest to the true color, although it is a bit too dark; the colors of the other two photos are much lighter than that of the plate.

Finishing included careful sanding and hand-rubbed Danish Oil, followed by buffing and waxing to a soft satin glow.
