Musical and Otherwise

The following are a variety of lathe-turned boxes. As you can see elsewhere on this website, I generally use native Texas woods and try to create pieces that have a useful function as well as a pleasing form. They are all finished to a smooth (can I say "sensual"?) surface that is pleasing to the touch as well as the eye.

The music boxes need little in the way of explanation - they are small and simple with quality, wind-up 18 note musical movements and with traditional tunes that are pleasing to me, and I hope, to you.

The "otherwise" boxes are simply well-turned open forms with tight fitting lids (yes- they generally "pop" when opened). They serve well for the temporary storage of small items such as jewelery and some are suitable for use as old fashioned salt boxes on a fancy dining room table.

Parabolic Lidded Box 08-1

This is a very nice lidded box turned in a parabolic form from Texas Huisache (Sweet Acacia to you non-Texans). The form resembles a UFO, but reminds me most of the parabolic "Event" building at the LAX airport.

The overall size is approximately 6 inches in diameter and 2-1/2 inches high. It has a gracefully rounded dome top. The bottom of the box is flat, and the entire form rests gently on four delicately pointed legs. The lid is quite thin and is capped by a matching rounded knob. The color is the rich rosy red of Osage Orange heartwood with a sharply contrasting patch of yellow-brown sapwood on one side that carries thru from the base into the lid.

This box has been finished in hand-rubbed Danish oil and buffed and waxed to a soft, smooth and glossy shine.
