Mesquite End Table

This is a small rustic table made entirely of Texas Honey Mesquite. The top is an approximately 4 inch thick slab of Mesquite root burl (the base and underground portion of the Mesquite tree). The overall dimensions of the table are approximately 21 inches long, 16 inches wide and 16 inches high.

Most of the top is Mesquite heartwood with a thin band of sapwood around most of the perimeter. The grain pattern is nicely symmetrical in the upper portion and around the hearts of several roots which branch off the root ball. A beautiful area of shimmery curly grain is present in one area.

Two prominent radial cracks were present at the trunk-cut edge of the slab and extended into the root-ball. They are stable and have been completely filled with coal-black epoxy to make a striking contrast with the red-brown of the Mesquite heartwood. The sides are natural root-bark and unfinished except where the above-ground tree trunk was cut from the root ball and where a major root limb was trimmed off.

The legs are turned from Mesquite with both heartwood and sapwood exposed. Assembly included a tight-fit mortise and tenon reinforced with a durable glue. The table top and sawn sides have been carefully planed, sanded and finished. The finish is multiple coats of Minwax Natural Polyurethane to seal the wood and resist water stains (by those who forget to use the coasters!).

Afraid that I am a better woodworker than photographer - I have difficulty with light control and color balance. The true color of this table is closer to the reddish-brown of the upper three photo than the darker brown of the lower two, close-up photos.
