Hummingbirds

During the summer months we commonly have dozens of tiny hummingbirds zipping around our garden. These mobiles and mounted birds are made from naturally colorful Texas woods, namely Honey Mesquite and Bodark (that's Osage Orange or Hedge Apple to you non-Texans). They are typically 7 to 8 inches in length and with a wingspan of 6 to 7 inches. The are finished in a clear gloss polyurethane.

Scaled in proportion to real hummingbirds, the wings are too small to be articulated, so they do not "flap" in the wind as do the other bird mobiles that I make (the Geese, Cardinals and Mallard Ducks). Instead, the wings are fixed, but on flexible attachments such that they can be adjusted. That long delicate-looking beak is aligned with the grain of the wood so it is really quite strong.

I make each of these birds individually and each is different depending on the grain patterns and various natural imperfections that I find in the wood. If you order one, what you receive will be very similar to those in the photos, but will not look exactly like any one of them. I think that you will be happy with them - if not, contact me and we will discuss it.
